Bird Island Inn was built in the early 1890s by Joseph Albert Tilley. Him and his wife Emily had five children, Edward, Debra, William, Samuel, and Thomas. Thomas died at the age of five years.
The Family grew potatoes, carrots, cabbages, lettuce, turnips, parsnips, onions, and beets. Joseph worked as a fisherman and part time as a cattle farmer.
Samuel went on to live in the house. He married Eunice Chaulk in 1942. The couple raised seven children in the house, Evelyn, Minnie, Warren, Yvonne, Albert, Alvin, and Hansel.
Samuel was a fisherman, logger, construction worker, and vegetable gardener. He worked as a carpenter in Labrador from the late 1940s to the late 1960s. Then retired and raised cattle part time here in Elliston.
Samuel and Eunice left the house to Hansel. The house was sold in 1997 and repurchased by Alvin Tilley. Alvin sold the house to Robin and Charlotte Ritman in June of 2004.
