HISTORIC TOWNS
In addition to the Elliston/Maberly area, where Bird Island Inn B&B is located, there are several historic communities within driving distance. Some of the more notable towns include Trinity, Port Union, and Bonavista. Bird Island Inn B&B is the perfect base of operations giving you the opportunity to view all the Peninsula has to offer.
TRINITY
Approx. 30 minutes from Bird Island Inn B&B. Although Trinity only has about a population of about 350, there are many architecturally significant buildings located throughout the community. The town is home to Rising Tide Theatre's summer program and was the location for the filming of The Shipping News, a high-budget 2001 Hollywood film starring acting icons Kevin Spacey, Julianne Moore, and Dame Judy Dench. The CBC series "Random Passage" was also filmed in the Trinity area. One of the few stretches of Newfoundland's railway still left in place after it was closed in the late 1980s, the Trinity Loop is also unique because of its unusual design.
PORT UNION
Approx. 15 minutes from Bird Island Inn B&B.
The first “union-built town” in Canada, Port Union was created in a flurry of construction starting in 1916. It was to be William Ford Coaker and the members of the Fishermen’s Protective Union’s “capital” as they built a new type of commercial and economic footing for Newfoundland’s fishermen. Some of Bonavista more notable attractions include the Factory and Bungalow (residence of Sir William F. Coaker)
BONAVISTA
Approx. 10 minutes from Bird Island Inn B&B. Bonavista was discovered by the Venetian explorer John Cabot who landed at Bonavista on June 24th, 1497. Some of Bonavista more notable attractions include The Matthew (replica of John Cabot’s ship); The Ryan Premises (National Historic Site), Mockbeggar Plantation, and The Dungeon (sea cave).
