CYCLING KAYAKING

Elliston is part of the discovery trail which is filled with biking trails that will thrill the toughest enthusiasts. Elliston alone has many challenging paths and coastal roads. Choose from challenging hills, gentle slopes, gravel roads, and even trails. It is even a great place to cruise the coast with a Seadoo!

BIRD WATCHING, WHALES, ICEBERGS

Elliston offers one of the closest land views of Atlantic Puffins in the world. Walk out to the entrance to the puffin colony, a section of land that can be best described and almost an island accessed via a narrow stretch of land. Once there continue to the edge and just a few meters or yards away you will spot these colourful birds first hand. Be sure to bring a camera because they can often be photographed in flight! Although not a common site bald eagles have been sighted in the area in addition to thousands of sea birds.

Whales are no strangers to Elliston. Each year we are fortunate to witness them swimming, jumping and feeding in our waters. There are days you can literally sit in your yard and just watch the show. The species that visit our area, including the "Pothead" and "Humpback" whales, can be often seen feeding on the caplin (tiny fish) that swarm annually by the millions to spawn around our shores.

The Icebergs that pass along the coast line of Elliston are 10,000-15,000 years old and are transported by the Labrador Current. The frequency of icebergs in the area varies annually.

SHOOTING RANGE

Elliston is one of the smallest Newfoundland communities to boast its very own shooting range The Discovery Shooting Club. During the Bird Island Puffin Festival the Club hosts the Annual Peter Tucker Memorial Shooting Challenge. This shoot is the only Festival event that is held outside the Sandy Cove area and is open to both visitors and residents alike. For more information visit the Club's site by Clicking Here
